Hindi alphabet – The smallest unit of Hindi language is sound. This sound itself is called varna. The set of arrangement of letters is called alphabet. Hindi has 53 characters on the basis of pronunciation. It has 12 vowels and 41 consonants. On the basis of writing, there are 57 letters, in which there are 12 vowels, 41 consonants and 4 combined consonants. There are two parts of the alphabet :- 1. Vowel 2. Consonant 1. What is a vowel :- The letters which can be spoken freely are called vowels.
All the letters of the Hindi alphabet have been divided into two parts in grammar – vowels and consonants. Panchamakshara means the fifth consonant of a class in the alphabet. For example, ‘O’, ‘J’, ‘N’, ‘N’, ‘M’ etc. In modern Hindi, the use of Panchamakshars has reduced a lot and in its place the use of bindi (S) has increased. Special :- The meaningful unit of language is sentence. A unit clause is smaller than a sentence, a unit phrase less than a sentence, a unit less than a phrase, a letter smaller than a phrase and a unit smaller than a letter, the sound is also called a letter.
Vowels: The letters which are uttered without stopping the breath, throat, palate, etc., are called ‘swaras’.
Consonants: While pronouncing the letters, the breath comes out of the throat, palate, etc., they are called ‘Vyanjan’. Often consonants are pronounced with the help of vowels.
