Vat Savitri Vrat Katha Overview
Vat Savitri Vrat is such a fast in which all women who believe in Hinduism wish for the longevity of their husbands and the birth of children. This fast is very popular in North India and it is observed in some states in South India as well. There are different opinions regarding the date of this fast in the mythological texts.This fast is observed on the new moon day of Jyestha month and on the full moon day of the same month. Story of Vat Savitri Vrat:
According to the mythological, authentic and popular Vat Savitri Vrat Katha, Savitri’s husband was short-lived, at the same time Dev Rishi Narad came and told Savitri that your husband is short-lived. You ask for another groom. But Savitri said – I am a Hindu woman, I choose my husband only once. At the same time, Satyavan head started suffering a lot.
Savitri placed her husband’s head on her lap under the banyan tree and made him lie down. At the same time Savitri saw that Yamraj had arrived with many Yamdoots. Taking Satyavan’s soul towards the south. Seeing this, Savitri also follows Yamraj.
Seeing her coming, Yamraj said – O chaste woman! The wife supports her husband till the earth itself. Now you go back. On this, Savitri said – Where my husband will live, I have to stay with him. This is my wife’s religion.
Yamraj was very pleased to hear this answer from the mouth of Savitri. He asked Savitri to ask for a groom and said – I will give you three grooms. Tell me which three grooms will you take.
Then Savitri asked for eye light for her mother-in-law and father-in-law, asked for the lost kingdom of father-in-law and asked for the boon of becoming the mother of hundred sons of her husband Satyavan. After hearing these three boons of Savitri, Yamraj blessed her and said- Amen! So be it.
Savitri again returned to the same banyan tree. where Satyavan was lying dead. Satyavan dead body again communicated. In this way, Savitri not only brought her husband back to life with the effect of her husband’s fast, but also restored the lost kingdom to her father-in-law by providing eye light to her mother-in-law and father-in-law.
Since then, there is a law to worship the banyan tree on Vat Savitri Amavasya and Vat Savitri Purnima. By observing this fast, the wishes of fortunate women are fulfilled and their good fortune remains unbroken.
The essence of the story of Savitri’s Pativrata Dharma :- is that devoted husbandly women are able to keep their husbands away from all sorrows and sufferings. Just as Savitri had freed her husband Satyavan from the bondage of Yamraj only by the power of pativrata dharma. Not only this, he also got back the lost kingdom and the eyesight of the blind mother-in-law and father-in-law. Similarly, women should consider only husband as their guru. One should not wander here and there in the cycle of Guru Deeksha.
Puja Vidhi:
On the day of Vat Savitri Vrat, the house should be purified with Ganges water by doing daily work. After this, the statue of Brahmaji should be installed in a bamboo basket by filling seven grains. The idol of Savitri should be installed on the left side of Brahma and the idol of Satyavan on the other side.
After this, the basket should be taken and kept under the banyan tree. After this, after worshiping Savitri and Satyavan, water should be offered to the root of the banyan tree. Water, molly, roli, yarn, incense, gram should be used at the time of worship. After circling the thread three times around the banyan tree, listen to the story of Savitri and Satyavan.
After the worship is over, clothes, fruits etc. should be donated by placing them in bamboo leaves and gram prasad should be distributed.
