Sambhaji Maharaj, also known as Chhatrapati Sambhaji or Shambhu Raje, was the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire in India. He was born on May 14, 1657, in the fortress of Purandar.

Sambhaji Maharaj grew up in a tumultuous period marked by conflicts between the Marathas and the Mughal Empire. Following his father’s footsteps, he was trained in military tactics and administration from a young age. He actively participated in his father’s military campaigns and played a crucial role in expanding the Maratha Empire.

After the death of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1680, Sambhaji Maharaj ascended to the throne as the second Chhatrapati of the Maratha Empire. However, his reign was fraught with challenges. The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb sought to weaken the Marathas and launched several military campaigns against them.

Sambhaji Maharaj fiercely resisted the Mughal forces and led his armies in numerous battles. Despite facing a formidable enemy, he displayed great courage and military strategy. However, in 1689, he was captured by the Mughals due to a betrayal and subjected to a brutal execution.

Sambhaji Maharaj’s martyrdom is seen as a symbol of his unwavering commitment to the Maratha cause and his refusal to surrender to the Mughal Empire. He is revered as a hero and a symbol of resistance in the history of Maharashtra.

The life and reign of Sambhaji Maharaj have been the subject of numerous historical accounts, plays, and literature. His legacy continues to inspire and hold a significant place in the hearts of the Maratha community and those who admire his courage and sacrifice.
