Overview of Ramcharitmanas Balkand

Shri Ramcharitmanas book was composed by Shri Tulsidas ji. In this book, Maryada Purushottam has been told in the context of the life of Lord Shri Ram and important events have been mentioned.

Balkand is a very important part of Ramcharitmanas. There are seven kandas in Ramcharitmanas, here kanda means chapter. Following are the seven chapters that come under Shri Ramcharitmanas: Child scandal, Ayodhya scandal, Aranya scandal, Kishkindha scandal, Sunderkand, Lanka scandal (war scandal) and Uttar scandal.

Highlights:

• Balkand is a part (kanda or sopan) of the Ramayana by Valmiki and the Sri Rama Charit Manas by Goswami Tulsidas. In Ayodhya there was a king named Dasaratha who had wives named Kausalya, Kaikeyi and Sumitra. To obtain children, Ayodhyapati Dasaratha performed Putrakameshti Yajna on the orders of his guru Shri Vashishtha which was performed by Rishi Rishi.
• Agnidev was pleased after receiving the devotional offerings and appeared himself and gave Havishyapatra (kheer, payas) to King Dasaratha, which he distributed among his three wives. As a result of consumption of Kheer, Rama was born from Kausalya’s womb, Bharata from Kaikeyi’s womb and Lakshmana and Shatrughna from Sumitra’s womb. Sita Swayamvar (Painter: Ravi Varma) When the princes grew up, Sage Vishwamitra sought Rama and Lakshmana from King Dasaratha to protect the hermitage from demons and took them with them.
• Rama killed demons like Tadka and Subahu and sent Maricha across the ocean by shooting him with a fruitless arrow. On the other hand, Laxman killed the entire army of demons. On receiving the invitation of King Janak for Dhanushayagya, Vishwamitra came to his city Mithila (Janakpur) along with Ram and Lakshman. On the way, Rama rescued Ahalya, the wife of Gautam Muni.
• Swayamvara of Sita, also known as Janaki, the daughter of King Janak, was organized in Mithila, where Rama married Sita by breaking the Shiv bow as per Janak’s promise. Along with the marriage of Rama and Sita, Guru Vashishtha married Bharata to Mandavi, Lakshmana to Urmila and Shrutkirti to Shatrughna.

• The outline of the entire story of Ramayana begins from here. From the religious point of view, the Balakand of Ramayana is very important. According to Brihadharmapuran, reciting this Kand gives freedom from all pain and sorrows.

  • श्लोकानां द्वे सहस्त्रे च साशीति शतकद्वयम्॥
