Overview of Shitala Satam
Shitala Mata, also known as Shitala Devi or Shitala Maa, is a Hindu goddess worshipped mainly in North India, particularly in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. She is believed to be the goddess of smallpox and other infectious diseases, and is considered to have the power to protect people from such diseases.
According to Hindu mythology, Shitala Mata was created by Lord Brahma to protect humanity from the smallpox epidemic. She is often depicted as a fair-skinned woman with a smallpox pustule on her forehead, holding a broom and a winnowing fan. Her devotees offer her various offerings, including milk, fruits, and flowers.
Shitala Mata is worshipped in different ways in different regions of India. In some areas, her festival is celebrated during the spring season, while in others, it is celebrated during the monsoon season. During the festival, devotees sing hymns and perform puja rituals to seek her blessings and protection from diseases.
Apart from her association with smallpox, Shitala Mata is also considered to be a symbol of purity, strength, and motherly love. She is believed to provide strength and courage to her devotees, and to protect them from all kinds of afflictions and misfortunes.
Story of Shitala Mata
According to Hindu mythology, the story of Shitala Mata begins with the creation of smallpox by the demon Jwarasur. The disease spread rapidly and caused immense suffering to humans. To save humanity from the epidemic, Lord Brahma created Shitala Mata, also known as the goddess of smallpox.
Legend has it that Shitala Mata was created out of the flames of a sacrificial fire. She appeared as a beautiful woman with a fair complexion and a smallpox pustule on her forehead. She was given a broom and a winnowing fan and was tasked with the duty of controlling the spread of smallpox.
As the goddess of smallpox, Shitala Mata is believed to have the power to protect people from the disease. Her devotees believe that by worshipping her with devotion, they can prevent the disease from affecting them or their loved ones.
One of the most popular stories associated with Shitala Mata is the one where she tests the faith of her devotees. According to this story, Shitala Mata appeared in the dreams of a farmer and instructed him to build a temple in her honor. The farmer built the temple as instructed, but it remained unused for many years as people were hesitant to visit it due to the fear of smallpox.
To test the faith of her devotees, Shitala Mata herself took the form of a smallpox-infected woman and entered the temple. The farmer’s daughter, who was a devout devotee of Shitala Mata, was the only one who dared to enter the temple and tend to the woman. Impressed by the girl’s faith and devotion, Shitala Mata revealed her true form and blessed her with good health and prosperity.
Since then, Shitala Mata has been worshipped as a powerful and benevolent goddess who protects her devotees from the smallpox epidemic and other infectious diseases.
