Vinayaka Chaturthi Katha

One day Lord Bholenath went to Bhogavati from Mount Kailash to take a bath. After the departure of Mahadev, Mother Parvati started bathing and while bathing in the house, she was made alive by making an effigy from her scum and putting life in that effigy. After the effigy came to life, Goddess Parvati named the effigy as Ganesh. Parvati ji asked the child Ganesha to guard the main gate while going to bathe. Mother Parvati said that unless I come after taking a bath, do not let anyone inside.

After bathing in Bhogavati, when Lord Ganesha started coming inside, the child form Ganesh stopped him at the door. Despite the efforts of Lord Shiva, Ganesh did not let him inside. He considered it an insult to be stopped by Ganesha and after beheading the child Ganesha, he went inside the house. When Shiva went inside the house, he was very angry. In such a situation, Goddess Parvati thought that she was angry because of the delay in the food, so she served food in two plates and requested her to have food.

Seeing two plates, Shiva asked him that for whom is the second plate? Then Shiva replied that the second plate is for son Ganesh, who is guarding the door. Then Lord Shiva told Goddess Parvati that I severed her head from the body due to anger. Hearing this, Parvati became sad and started mourning. He urged Bholenath to bring the son Ganesha’s head back to life. Then Mahadev cut off the head of an elephant baby and attached it to the torso of Ganesha. Mother Parvati was very pleased to find her son alive again. It is said that just as Shiva had given new life to Lord Ganesha, in the same way Lord Ganesha is also considered to be the god of new life.

सुर मुनि-पूजित गणनायक की॥

एकदंत, शशिभाल, गजानन,

विघ्नविनाशक, शुभगुण कानन,

शिवसुत, वन्द्यमान-चतुरानन,

दु:खविनाशक, सुखदायक की॥

आरती गजवदन विनायक की।

सुर मुनि-पूजित गणनायक की॥

ऋद्धि-सिद्धि स्वामी समर्थ अति,

विमल बुद्धि दाता सुविमल-मति,

अघ-वन-दहन, अमल अविगत गति,

विद्या, विनय-विभव दायक की॥

पिंगलनयन, विशाल शुंडधर,

धूम्रवर्ण, शुचि वज्रांकुश-कर,

लम्बोदर, बाधा-विपत्ति-हर,
